Garbage crises no closer to being solved

The garbage crisis, declared solved earlier this week by a committee headed by MP Akram Chehayib, seems no closer to being solved.

Residents from areas surrounding the Naameh landfill, held protests rejecting its reopening. The plan proposes the reopening of Naameh for a one week period so that garbage which has piled up since the crises began in July, can be disposed of.

Residents from the Akkar region, and Majdel Anjar also held protests against proposed dumps being opened in their areas.

Residents of Sidon and Bourj Hammoud are planning rallies to show their disapproval of sites being reactivated that had been previously closed.

It would seem that no region in Lebanon wants the rubbish to be disposed of within its boundary, leaving no tangible solution on the horizon.

You Stink activists have also rejected the garbage plan as deceptive and of not meeting expectations.

Meanwhile Pro Mustaqbal party media is reporting that the garbage plan is being stifled by the Free Patriotic Movement and Hizballah. This speculation disregards that those parties did not have any say in the decision as they had boycotted the cabinet session. It also disregards the fact that the Prime Minister has taken decisions regarding this file without the votes of the FPM and allies, ignoring the need for cabinet voting to be unanimous in the absence of a President.
