A bid by the Mustaqbal party leader Saad Hariri and by PSP leader Walid Jumblatt to declare support for Marada Leader Suleiman Franjieh as President seem to have been stalled by opposition from many political groups in the country as well as a lack of details in regards to the agreement reached between the parties in Paris last month.
Details of the discussions in Paris between Harriri, Jumblatt and Franjieh are yet to be released.
Details regarding the nature of the Electoral law that will be applied at the next parliamentary election remain a major concern for many parties; eager to see an end to the existing law, which marginalises big segments of the Lebanese community, particularly the Christian community.
There is much media speculation of a possible meeting between Franjieh and General Michel Aoun, leader of the Free Patriotic Movement, which has the largest Christian representation in the Parliament. It is reported that Franjieh has requested this meeting in order to brief General Aoun of the discussions held last month in Paris.
The announcement of Harriri’s yet to be confirmed backing of Franjieh for the Presidential post, has also caused much tension between the Mustaqbal party and other March 14 allies, particularly the Lebanese Forces, due to the manner in which this decision was taken without any prior consultation amongst the allies.
